Frequently asked questions and answers
Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
I do not have an electronic version of my diploma, what do I do then?
If you do not have the opportunity to take a photo of or scan the diploma, contact us at
I have participated in the admission tests before. Can I apply again and take the admission tests again?
No, unfortunately. It is not possible to retake the admissions tests. This also applies if you have taken the admissions tests through someone other than Avinor Flysikring AS, since the same tests are used throughout Europe.
Must I have completed compulsory military service to apply?
The requirement for cleared military service has been removed, meaning that you can apply for air traffic controller training even if you have not completed initial military service. Those who are offered a study place will receive conditional exemption from initial military service as long as they are air traffic controller students.
I am in my final year of high school - can I apply and send my diploma later?
No, unfortunately. You must have completed high school when you apply. Our recruitment process ends already at the end of May, and we cannot invite you to our admissions phases without knowing what your final course and exam grades are.
I have been kindly asked to present the original high school diploma for verification. Is a copy of the diploma okay?
Unfortunately. It is not sufficient to present a copy of the diploma. We have already received the copy or electronic diploma as an attachment to the application, so we do not need a new copy. The purpose is to verify the copy against the original. If you cannot find your original diploma, you must contact the school. They will be able to issue a duplicate, which we approve as an “original” document.
How is the average grade calculated?
We use the same point calculation as the Norwegian Universities and Colleges Admission Service. This means that we add together all the grades on the diploma, then divide the total by the number of grades. The average is calculated without any extra points of any kind. You therefore do not receive any extra points for age, science subjects, language, gender, specialization, folk high school, military service, etc.
I have an average of 3.9 from high school. Can I apply for the program?
It depends. We work with one decimal place: 4.0 as an absolute requirement. If you have 3.95, this is rounded up to 4.0.
Can I apply for the air traffic controller training program using the 23/5 rule?
Yes, the 23/5 rule also applies to air traffic controller training. YOU must have an average grade of 4.0 or better in the subjects required for university admissions. See http://www.samordnaopptak.no for more information.
I am considering retaking courses to improve my grades. Do you accept secondary school certificates?
Yes, we accept secondary school certificates (competence certificates) that show improved grades. You must also attach the original certificate. You must have improved the grades by the application deadline. Submission of competence certificates/certificates after the application deadline is not accepted.
I am 18 years old and will turn 19 during the admissions year. Do I have to wait until the next admission period before I can apply for the air traffic controller training?
Yes, you will probably have to wait before applying for admission.
Is there an upper age limit for applying to the air traffic controller training program?
No, there is no upper age limit for applying to air traffic controller training.
Can I obtain a security clearance even if I have something on my criminal record?
The Civil Security Clearance Authority is the clearance authority that determines whether or not you are granted a security clearance at Avinor. They assess your loyalty, reliability, and sound judgment according to the specified criteria pursuant to Section 21, first paragraph, of the Security Act. There is no automatic rule that you will be denied clearance if you have a background that is relevant to any of these criteria. Everyone is entitled to an individual assessment of their suitability from a security perspective.

What is meant by the requirement that vision correction cannot be more than +5/-6 diopters?
This means that farsightedness of less than +5 or nearsightedness of less than -6 is accepted. If you have had vision correction, the values before the operation apply.
I am considering having vision surgery. Will corrected vision through surgery be approved?
We recommend that you investigate the circumstances surrounding any possible eye surgery with an eye doctor/optometrist. Health requirements are regulated by the Norwegian Civil Aviation Authority. More detailed information about medical requirements for air traffic controllers (Class 3) can be found on the Norwegian Civil Aviation Authority’s website: Medical requirements Class 3 air traffic controller.
How can I prepare for the entrance exams?
The tests used in the selection process are called FEAST (First European Air Traffic Controller Selection Test) and are a test battery developed by Eurocontrol. The tests are conducted in English and are carried out on a PC. No special prior knowledge or preparation is necessary in order to take the tests.
Eurocontrol has developed a practice platform designed to help applicants prepare for the selection tests. By practicing on the training platform, you can become familiar with the tasks that will be performed on the test.
The exercises are not identical to the tests you will encounter in the selection process, but the concept and principles are the same. Expect the tests to be more extensive, both in complexity and scope.
Eurocontrol recommends completing all the exercises 2-3 times so that you become familiar with the principles. Eurocontrol does not recommend practicing for more than 8 hours before the test, as this can make it more difficult to adapt to the actual test.
You can find the practice test here.
When can I expect to start the education?
Those who pass the admission tests during the spring and are offered a study place can, in principle, expect to start their studies in the fall of the same year.
Do I have to pay tuition during air traffic controller training?
The education is covered by Avinor Air Navigation Services, meaning that Avinor Air Navigation Services pays tuition and materials. The training is very expensive, as it includes a great deal of simulator training, which is especially resource-intensive. This is covered by Avinor Air Navigation Services, while the students themselves must cover expenses for housing, food, etc. The program is approved by Lånekassen as a 9-month course under standard terms. Air traffic control students receive paid employment during the final part of the program, the practical training period in Norway.
Is it possible to request a specific unit during the practical training period or during the obligated service period?
No, unfortunately. Individual wishes or special needs will not be taken into account when assigning internship placements (OJT unit) or duty service locations.
Can one apply to another unit after the mandatory service has been completed after 3 years?
When the mandatory service (3 years) is over, you may apply for transfer to another unit if you wish. When you get the opportunity to transfer depends on the staffing situation at the unit where you are and whether there is an open position at the place you are applying to.
What salary and conditions can I expect during my training and once I have completed my training as an air traffic controller?
Education
The first year of air traffic controller training is conducted at CANI in Prague, Czech Republic. Avinor Air Navigation Services pays the tuition fees, but each individual must cover travel and living expenses themselves. It is then possible to apply to the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund (Lånekassen) for loans and grants under the usual conditions for students studying abroad.
Air traffic controller trainees are temporarily employed by Avinor Air Navigation Services AS when they return after completing the first year at CANI in Prague, Czech Republic, and they will then receive trainee pay.
Trainee pay is 451,200 as of 01.10.26.
Salary after education
The starting salary for a newly qualified air traffic controller is 703,000 as of 01.10.26.
Over time, annual salary will increase, depending on which unit you work at and your seniority.
Obligatory service
After completing the education, there is a three-year obligatory service period at the unit Avinor determines at any given time.
