About the job as an AFIS officer

    1. What does an AFIS officer do?

AFIS (Aerodrome Flight Information Service) is a local flight information service. An AFIS officer provides traffic information, weather observation, alarm and rescue services, as well as monitors weather conditions and communicates with aircraft and airport personnel. The role is to ensure safe and efficient flying by conveying necessary information to aircraft and other parties, as well as updating weather data to the Meteorological Institute. The officer coordinates ground activities, keeps in touch with aircraft via radio, and ensures that everyone has the correct information for a safe flight.

    2. Where does an AFIS officer work?

AFIS officers work in Avinor's AFIS towers or in the RTC (remote tower center) in Bodø, coordinating air traffic for multiple airports using camera surveillance and radar. At RTC, they participate in a larger work environment and use advanced technologies, such as night vision cameras. AFIS officers are important for the functioning of aviation in the districts.

    The Education

To become an AFIS officer, you undergo a theoretical and practical education that takes about 9 months. The education is paid for by Avinor, and you receive a salary during the period.

    The training includes:

    • Introductory course (3 days): Introduction to Norwegian aviation.
    • Basic training (approx. 3 months): Takes place at Trondheim Airport, Værnes, where you learn about the AFIS profession and its service execution, including simulator exercises with instructors.
    • Practical training (approx. 6 months): You work in a "live" operational position under the guidance of an instructor, providing flight information services.

The education concludes with an authorization test for the Civil Aviation Authority. After passing the test, you can start as an independent AFIS officer in the tower.

    Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

I do not have an electronic version of my diploma, what should I do then?

If you are unable to take a picture of or scan the diploma, you must as soon as possible send a paper copy to:

      •  Avinor Flysikring AS, Competence, Postbox 150, 2061 Gardermoen. Please mark the envelope with AFIS training.

The sooner you send it in, the faster you will receive a response to your application.

I am in my final year of high school - can I apply and send the diploma later?

No, unfortunately. You need to have completed high school when you apply and be able to attach the diploma that confirms you have obtained general university admissions certification.

I have been called in for an entrance exam and have been asked to present the original high school diploma for verification. I cannot find the original. Is it okay to provide a copy of the diploma?

Unfortunately. It is not sufficient to present a copy of the diploma. We have already received the copy or electronic diploma as an attachment in the application, so we do not need a new copy. The purpose is to check the copy against the original. If you cannot find your original diploma, you must contact the school. They will be able to issue a duplicate that we accept as an "original" document.

How is the average grade calculated?

We follow the same point calculation as Samordna opptak. The average is calculated from all the grades on the diploma but without any extra points of any kind. You therefore receive no extra points for age, science subjects, languages, gender, specialization, folk high school, military service, etc.

I have an average of 3.4 from high school. Can I apply for admission?

It depends. We operate with one decimal: 3.5 as an absolute requirement. If you have 3.45, this is raised to 3.5.

I meet the requirements for general study competence through the 23/5 rule. Does the 23/5 rule also apply to AFIS education?

Yes, it also applies to AFIS training. You must have an average grade of 3.5 or better in the study competence subjects (subject requirement). Remember to include documentation of 5 years of education/practice.
    See
    http://www.samordnaopptak.no/info/ for more information.

I am considering retaking courses to improve my grades - are secondary diplomas accepted?

Yes, we accept secondary diplomas (certificate of competence) that show improved grades. You must also attach the original diploma. You must have improved the grades by the application deadline. Submission of certificates/diplomas after the application deadline is not accepted.

I am 19 years old and will turn 20 during the admissions year. Do I have to wait until the next admissions period before I can apply for air traffic controller training?

Yes, you probably have to wait to apply for admission until you turn 20.

Is there an upper age limit to apply?

There is no upper age limit for applying to the AFIS education.

Can I obtain security clearance even if I have something on my criminal record?

To this question, the National Security Authority responds that as the clearance authority, they will assess your loyalty, reliability, and sound judgment according to given criteria in accordance with the first section of the Security Act § 21.

There is no automatic disqualification from clearance if you have a background relevant to any of these criteria. Everyone is entitled to an individual assessment to evaluate their security suitability.

    Click here for more information.

How can I prepare for the entrance exams?
The tests used assess characteristics that are relatively constant and that can hardly be improved through practice, i.e., characteristics that one either has or does not have.
Is it possible to request a specific unit during the internship/service period?

No, unfortunately. Individual preferences or special needs will not be considered when allocating internship placements (OJT unit) or locations for mandatory service.

When the mandatory service is over, can one apply to another unit?

When the mandatory service (1.5 years) is over, one can apply for a transfer to another unit. When one gets the opportunity to move depends on the staffing situation at the unit one is in, and whether there is an available position where one applies.

What salary and conditions can I expect during the training and when I am a qualified AFIS officer?

    During Education

AFIS students are temporarily employed by Avinor Air Navigation Services and receive a salary during their education. The salary is intended to cover all expenses related to the education (housing costs, travel expenses, etc.). Starting salary as of 04/01/2023 is 336,100,-

The training will mainly take place during the day, but some inconvenient working hours must be expected. The temporary employment lasts until the training is completed, and the first-time authorization as an AFIS officer is passed. The temporary employment is terminated without notice if the AFIS student does not pass the necessary exams or for any reason is not considered qualified for the AFIS service. The same applies if the AFIS training must be discontinued for other reasonable reasons.

    Salary After Education

After completing the education, authorization, and compulsory service, AFIS students must apply for available, announced positions as AFIS officers at our AFIS units. As an AFIS officer, one receives a starting salary of 608,100,- to 623,800,- NOK per year, in addition to fixed and variable shift allowances.

    Compulsory Service

After completing the education, there is 18 months of compulsory service at the air traffic service units that Avinor may determine at any given time.
