We are building the airspace of the future

Did you know that Avinor's FAS program is one of Norway's largest IT projects?
– This is the most extensive technological modernization in Norwegian and European air traffic ever, says the program manager for FAS, Åse Velure Tretten.

You might remember the news stories about major delays in air traffic in Europe in 2024? Due to overloaded airspace over Central Europe, according to NRK, many travelers had their vacations completely or partially ruined by flights that were canceled or significantly delayed.

Avinor is now working to solve this challenge, together with the EU, European partners, and sister organizations.

FAS stands for Future ATM System, and ATM stands for Air Traffic Management. This program will develop and establish the infrastructure for air traffic control in Norwegian airspace.

–  We are going to replace the main system for how our airspace is managed, explains Åse.

More efficient and sustainable aviation

There are several reasons why Norway and Europe need this modernization. Firstly, Europe's airspace is undersized for future traffic volumes. It is simply not equipped to handle the increase in air traffic and the greater prevalence of drone traffic.

Need More Technologists

To succeed with FAS, Avinor needs a broad range of technological expertise - including architects, developers, testers, project staff, and operations engineers.

– We need people who can work both strategically and operationally, who are capable of collaborating across disciplines, and who are excited to be part of something big. Working with aviation is both professionally exciting and very meaningful, says Åse.

She is a good example of not needing an aviation background to work at Avinor. She is trained as a technologist and started her career in software testing before moving to project management in the banking and insurance industry. When she worked as a hired consultant, she came in contact with Avinor and the FAS program and found it so exciting that she chose to accept the program manager position she holds now.

– I am driven by creating an open and inclusive culture, where we support each other and are not afraid to try new things. And I find it very rewarding to give people the opportunity to develop through good collaboration and exciting tasks, she shares.

A Unified Europe

The goal of a unified airspace over Europe – Single European Sky – is very complex and consists of many building blocks. Therefore, each country must begin upgrading and replacing systems and platforms in stages.

Therefore, FAS is exciting for you as a technologist

Single European Sky is the most complex and data-driven technological collaboration in European aviation ever. Now we need more technologists on the team. Here are some of the things you can work on:

  • Development and deployment of the future ATM system (Air Traffic Management), which manages and monitors air traffic in the airspace.
  • Integration between old and new systems – both in our own and European networks.
  • Big data and real-time prediction of aircraft movements.
  • Development and testing of systems that need to operate 24/7 without margin for error.
  • Close collaboration with the control centers in Røyken and Stavanger, and professional environments with expert resources in system architecture, data analysis, security, infrastructure, simulation, and operational IT.
  • Colleagues who are passionate about the social mission and the development of Norwegian aviation.
  • Be part of building solutions that literally manage the airspace over all of Europe.
