AFIS (Aerodrome Flight Information Service) is an exciting career path for those who want a varied job in aviation. We spoke with Nils Ole, who recently completed the training and works as an AFIS officer, to hear more about his experiences.

What made you choose the AFIS training? – I have always had an interest in aviation, and the AFIS training allows you to work operationally within the field. Additionally, the training is short, paid, and offers good opportunities for permanent employment after completion.

What is the training process like? – The training starts with a combination of theoretical instruction and simulator training. After this, we go out for practice at an airport, where we gain experience in handling the traffic in the tower. All of this takes about 9-10 months, and the best part is that we receive a salary throughout the entire training process.

What is a typical day like as an AFIS student?

There really isn't a "typical" day because the daily routine varies so much. In the beginning, it's mostly theory and simulator training, but as we transition to practice, it's much more hands-on. When we work in the tower, the day often starts with checking equipment and preparing for the day's air traffic. We provide information to aircraft about weather conditions and other relevant traffic, and it's our responsibility to ensure everything proceeds efficiently and safely.

I recommend everyone who is curious about the AFIS training to take the aptitude test. It's a great way to find out if this profession is right for you.

What qualities should one have to succeed as an AFIS officer?

The most important thing is to have good oversight and the ability to handle stress. You need to think quickly and communicate clearly with both pilots and colleagues. Although many may think you must be very interested in aviation technology, it's largely about being a good coordinator and problem solver.

What is the best thing about the education and job as an AFIS officer?

The best thing is probably the operational work in the tower. I enjoy talking to the planes and helping ensure the traffic flows smoothly. In addition, the working conditions are very good – I have a permanent job after completing my education, a good salary, and a secure working environment.

Do you have any advice for those considering applying?

I recommend anyone curious about AFIS education to take the aptitude test. It is a good way to find out if this career is right for you. Don't hesitate to ask questions – Avinor Air Navigation Services is very accommodating and provides good guidance.
