Is it possible to combine exciting, socially critical tasks with well-being and a good working environment? Abinaya Sakthivel has been given both in her job at Avinor.

Abinaya Sakthivel is a java developer at Avinor, based at the control centre in Røyken.
"It worked out from the start. I was allowed to visit after the interview. A nice lunch with the team gave me an insight into what my working day would look like. I really appreciated that, because well-being is the most important thing to me.
When she started at Avinor, she came straight from school, and had a somewhat atypical background with mathematical and theoretical subjects. She was involved in the projects right away.
"There were a lot of things that were new to me, but I received good training, and felt that people invested in time to give me a good start. It made me feel like part of the team from day one.

System for future airspace control
Abinaya is part of the Aims team, which has a state-of-the-art technology stack. They are keen to test new technology, and now they run all their projects on Kubernetes and Docker. The team consists of 11 developers, which in turn are divided into three; one platform team and two application teams.
When describing her work tasks, she gives an example from the most exciting project for technologists in Røyken right now: The shift from the old air traffic control system to a completely new system called iTEC. The system is being developed in alliance with several other European countries and will give Avinor access to a modern, common European technology platform.
“"It means a lot of exciting tasks for us developers in the years ahead.”

Right now, testing new integrations with iTEC is taking up all her time. Because when you want to replace such a comprehensive system as the air traffic control system, you have to test a lot. And here, her team acts as an integration platform and an intermediary that will make the transition between the two systems smoother.
"This means that we can switch between the systems, so that we can test, and check that the new system works as it should. We are developing the system for air traffic services of the future, and I think that is very big and exciting to be a part of.
Large professional environment
In Røyken, there is a large professional environment with over 70 employees with different and varied technology expertise, and domain knowledge of airspace control. This is a great advantage, says Abinaya:
"There is always someone you can spar with to solve the problems you are struggling with. If there's anything I'm wondering about, just grab someone who has that expertise. We are never left alone with the problems, here we work together," she states.
